Connecting to the Real World, Part 1 (CS Discoveries - Code.org)

Context: One way to act in the role of lead learner is to actually model the process you use to learn something new (last bullet in the above section). This activity will guide you through finding real world connections back to what students are learning in the curriculum.

Plan a Classroom Discussion with Students

Once you have identified potentially interesting topic(s), consider how you might present that information about the real world application to students. Start out by developing a 15 - 20 minute discussion.

Reflect on the following questions about the discussion you put together

  1. How did you learn about this application of the concept? (literally, what process did you use to gain new information?)
  2. What is important for students to know about the real world application of the concept?
  3. What are some discussion prompts that can be used to help students connect what they have done in class to what is happening in the real world?
